First wonder of Colombia

The emblem of the cultural capital of Saline. 180 meters underground.

Zipaquirá, Villa de la Sal, houses in the depths of the earth a saline deposit of approximately 1 square kilometer. The indigenous peoples were the first to discover the saline wealth of the region and during the colony, the production of Zipaquirá salt pans was source of economic development for the Viceroyalty.

With the arrival of industrialization and the dangers inherent in the exploitation of this mineral, the miners, fervent believers, made small altars inside the mine, venerating the Holy Virgin, under the invocation of “Our Lady of the Rosary of Guasa.” ” in search of his protection. The faith of the miners and the idea of converting the large pits into a temple was echoed and welcomed by the Bank of the Republic, who at that time administered the salt mines.

The first Cathedral was inaugurated in 1954, but the structural defects were closed in September 1992. In 1995, the second and current Cathedral was inaugurated, designed by architect Roswell Garavito Pearl.
Today, Salt Cathedral is considered the First Wonder of Colombia, the only underground temple in the world and one of the most impressive places of worship on the planet. This architectural and engineering jewel receives about 600,000 visitors from different parts of the world each year.
